The river beneath the causse
July 2026
At Massegros Causses Gorges, limestone rules the skyline while the river winds far below, out of sight from the road. Two worlds, one valley.
A river winds beneath the limestone cliffs of the Causse Méjean, in the Tarn gorges, in the commune of Massegros Causses Gorges in Lozère. The causses, these limestone plateaus of the southern Massif Central, are UNESCO World Heritage listed as cultural landscapes of agropastoralism.
Photographed by drone (7 mm, f/1.8) at a very fast shutter speed (1/4405s), the image captures the rock strata lining the riverbed, carved by millions of years of karst erosion.
