Outdoor ice rink in the snow in Toronto, winter 2025

January 2025

Skaters on the snow-covered ice rink at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto, luminous TORONTO sign visible at night, January 2025.

Nathan Phillips Square, in front of Toronto's city hall, hosts one of Canada's best-known outdoor ice rinks every winter, free and open late into the evening. The illuminated TORONTO sign, installed in 2015, has become the city's most photographed landmark. The shot was taken on 22 January 2025, in the evening, during active snowfall. Unlike most images in the collection, this one was not taken by drone: the slow shutter speed (1/30s) and the 17mm focal length give away a handheld shot, taken in the cold, to capture the skaters' motion and the falling snow without freezing the scene.
