Panoramic view over the Cantal volcanoes, France
August 2024
Summer aerial view over the rounded summits and forests of the Cantal volcanic massif from Saint-Jacques-des-Blats, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, in August 2024.
This panorama was shot above the Cantal volcanoes, in the French Massif Central, near Saint-Jacques-des-Blats. The rounded summits visible here are the remnants of one of Europe's largest stratovolcanoes, now covered in mountain pastures grazed by cattle each summer.
The shot was taken by drone, with a wide-angle lens (4 mm, f/1.6), to capture the full sweep of the ridgeline without excessive distortion. The low, late-day light carves out the relief and highlights the grazing lines that pattern the landscape.
