View over the Mandailles valley from the Cantal

The Mandailles valley in the Cantal owes its characteristic U-shape to the glaciers that carved it during the ice ages, long after the volcano that formed the massif went extinct. That geological signature, a flat floor framed by steep slopes, is what distinguishes a glacial valley from one simply eroded by a river. Taken on 10 August 2024 in late morning from the heights of Mandailles-Saint-Julien, the image frames the whole U-shape: meadows and forests at the bottom, villages scattered along the watercourse, the massif's rounded summits in the background. The summer light, still low at that hour, sharply outlines the relief of the slopes.
